Learn more about where your water comes from and what happens to water after you use it.
Pay attention to what’s going in your trash and your recycling bins. Make this a math lesson by having them make a bar graph or pie chart showing the type of items and numbers used in a week or percentage of the household waste. After your waste audit, make a commitment to reduce the amount of trash you send to the landfill. Think about if you need to continue to purchase that product or if there are durable items you can purchase that would replace the disposable product.
Ideas to get you started: Switch from paper to cloth napkins and from paper towels to reusable towels and rags. Purchase fruits and vegetables that don’t come in plastic bags or are covered in plastic film. Buy items packaged in cardboard, cans, and jars, instead of plastic bags.
Discover a new park or revisit one you haven’t been to in a while. The GreenFest Scavenger hunts are a family-friendly nature exploration for all ages and abilities. This outdoor adventure will teach you about eco-friendly features in your community and at local parks.
The Greenfest BINGO is a great way to make personal sustainability focused commitments and explore eco-friendly features in your community.
Each household that submits a completed scavenger hunt or BINGO will be entered into a drawing for outdoor exploration kits (see prize section and rules below).
You may also pick up the BINGO card in person at the Brookside Gardens Visitor Center located at 1800 Glenallan Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20902. The Visitor Center is open 7 days a week between 10:00am and 2:00pm.
To avoid crowded parks we encourage you to do the scavenger hunt on non-peak evening and weekend hours. Please follow all CDC guidelines around social distancing and mask-wearing while out in the community.
